Why should I take a prenatal multivitamin?

Pregnant women or women of childbearing age who are planning to become pregnant should take a prenatal multivitamin. Proper prenatal nutrition care can help support a healthy pregnancy and baby.³   Pregnant women must meet the needs of a growing baby without sacrificing the nutrients their own bodies require.†

What are the health benefits of a prenatal multivitamin?

Taken daily, a prenatal supplement provides nutritional support to help fill nutrient gaps that have been shown to exist for several key vitamins and minerals through national research data.⁵   Nature Made Prenatal Multi + DHA is carefully formulated to provide the essential building blocks both mothers and babies need,³ including folic acid, iron, calcium, vitamin D, the omega-3 fatty acid DHA, and zinc, to help support healthy nervous and immune systems, bone health and cellular energy production.†

Adequate folic acid is important for the developing fetus from conception and may reduce a woman’s risk of having a child with a neural tube defect.⁴   Iron needs are higher during pregnancy to support an increase in blood volume and development of a healthy baby.⁶ Calcium and vitamin D are important for bone health support in the mother and baby.⁷ The essential omega-3 fatty acid DHA is directly transferred from the mother to baby during these development stages and plays a crucial role in fetal brain and eye development.² †

When should I start taking a prenatal multivitamin?

You should begin your prenatal supplement prior to official pregnancy determination in order to ensure that you are receiving key nutrients needed even before you may know you are pregnant. For example, adequate folic acid in healthful diets may help reduce a woman's risk of having a child with a neural tube defect (abnormalities of the brain and spine), but the neural tube is already formed by day 28, even before many women know they are pregnant.⁴
