What Is the Difference Between Granulated Onion and Dried Onion?

Member's Mark Organic Granulated Onion is made from bulb onions, which are chopped, dehydrated and ground to a fine powder that packs powerful flavor in dips and salad dressings. You can use granulated onion, also known as onion powder, to replace chopped onion when cooking.

To substitute in recipes, use a teaspoon of granulated onion to replace 1/2 cup of fresh chopped onions.

By contrast, dried onions are made from onion bulbs that have been cut, dried and then left in pieces. When rehydrated, they more closely resemble chopped onion. Granulated onion delivers a smoother texture for the dish.

What Are Some Tips for Cooking with Granulated Onion?

Use Member's Mark Organic Granulated Onion in sour-cream based dips to add a hearty, sharp, sweet flavor. Since dips are typically not cooked, allow several hours for the flavors to meld together. Granulated onion is a better choice than dried onion for dips because it dissolves and incorporates faster.

When adding granulated onion to a cooked dish, avoid pouring the spice directly into the heated dish or pot. Instead, use a measuring spoon or pour the onion into your palm. Since granulated onion absorbs moisture easily, it is prone to clumping. If it does clump, break it up using a fork or spoon.
